Prestigious awards ceremony chooses local beer festival as host

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has chosen to return to the Gateshead Beer and Music Festival on Thursday 7th May 2020 as the host for their annual North East Independent Beer Awards.

The festival is celebrating its 11th birthday this year and will provide the venue for the judges to decide on the best beers and ales from the region. The North East champions in each category will join the 7 other regional champions from the UK in moving forward to the national awards, which are held at BeerX, the UK’s largest independent craft brewing trade show.

The awards represent the very best beer from the UK’s independent brewers and are judged by fellow brewers and industry experts, making these awards the “Brewers’ Choice” awards in the UK.

Mark Anderson, Managing Director of Maxim Brewery and SIBA regional trustee , said:

“The North East regional beer competition and awards will showcase the best beers and breweries from Sheffield to Berwick on Tweed. Some 180 real ales and 100’s of bottled and canned beers of varying styles are entered into the competition and we are pleased that these will then be available for consumption at the Gateshead Beer and Music Festival weekend.’’

VE Day Celebrations – update

By Beer festival 2020

Join us for a weekend of VE celebrations including our street party theme on Friday 8th May.

This day will feature live music from the Strictly Smokin’ Band who will be performing a 1940’s set and the sweet harmonies of The Doo Wop Dollies.

We are also featuring music from Mike Memphis (Elvis), The Sleeze Sisters (1970’s Glam rock) and the Fantastic We are Champion (Queen Tribute) and many more!

What better way to celebrate VE day then the sounds of the big bands from the 40’s.

At it’s core – Strictly Smokin’ is a big band. We’re incredibly lucky to have the finest array of commercial musicians in Newcastle playing with the band.

The big band regularly plays jazz clubs and festivals around the UK, but is equally qualified to perform for functions with it’s numerous line ups.

The Doo Wop Dollies are a vintage loving female singing group, bringing you the best songs from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s
Since 2014 we have been bringing the North East songs from the likes of The Andrew Sisters, The Boswell Sisters, The Chordettes and many more…
